Periago also gave NU a big lift off the bench, matching her career high with 11 points, on 4-of-4 shooting from the field, while adding five rebounds. Cory Montgomery added her sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kelley gave the Huskers five players in double figures with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. Catheryn Redmon also gave the Huskers strong play inside with six points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
"We have a lot to play for, and I think after one of the early timeouts in the second half, we challenged our players to turn up the intensity and they responded," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "We basically turned them loose and they responded by hitting some shots. The crowd really got into it and it was a lot of fun."
"That was the most fun I have ever had," Neals said. "It was fun to get in a run like that where everybody is hitting shots. I was just glad I could be a part of it. This was a big win for us tonight because we still have a chance for the postseason. We have made five straight trips to the postseason and we want to keep that going."
Turner then hit back-to-back shots to push the lead to 42-34 with 12:55 left, before Kelley gave the Huskers their first double-digit lead of the night with a three-pointer to make it 45-34. Spears stopped NU's 13-0 run during a stretch of just 2:29, but Periago kept Nebraska rolling with another three-pointer, before adding a jumper to push the NU margin to 50-36 with 11:05 left. Kaitlyn Burke then connected on her second three of the night to extend the Husker lead to 53-36 with 10:32 left and cap the 21-2 spurt.
For the game, Nebraska shot a Big 12 season-best 49 percent (25-51) from the field, including a blistering 57.7 percent (15-26) in the second half. The Huskers knocked down 42.9 percent (9-21) of their three-pointers, while connecting on 80 percent (16-20) of their free throws. NU also outrebounded the Buffs, 34-28, while forcing 17 turnovers by the Buffs, including 10 in the second half.
Colorado hit 50 percent (28-56) of its shots from the floor, but just 4-of-12 three-pointers. Bianca Smith, who hit 7-of-10 three-pointers in the first meeting between the two teams in Boulder, went 0-for-1 from long range on the night. CU was also just 4-of-11 from the free throw line. The Buffs did force 18 NU turnovers.
Nebraska wraps up the regular season on Saturday when the Huskers travel to Stillwater to battle Oklahoma State. Tip-off with the Cowgirls is set for 6 p.m., with free live audio available on Huskers.com and premium video to HuskersNside subscribers provided by Oklahoma State.
The Miners answered a wave of La. Tech 3-pointers and good shooting in general by creating havoc with their pressure, making shots at key times and getting the stops they had to have. That ended up being enough for a 72-66 victory against a hot Louisiana Tech team coming off a victory at Rice.
"Outrebound the opponent, turn them over more than anybody else, then we made timely shots I thought were big. We made big 3s down the stretch against their zone, then big free throws and inbounds plays that were executed well.
UTEP's plan in this one was to let Louisiana Tech shoot 3s and they made 9-of-15 from long range, part of a 54 percent shooting day. The Miners shot 42 percent, but won because they forced 22 turnovers to allow them to take 14 more shots, won the boards 30-25 and made 16-of-18 free throws.
After the Techsters got within 64-61 with 1:58 to play, Adhele Tac and Jazion Jackson hit follow shots around Louisiana Tech's 21st turnover. The Miners won second-chance points 7-0 in the fourth quarter.
"Look at the first half: Without our bench we would have been in deep trouble," Baker said. "We were in foul trouble, they had momentum. Then Erin (Wilson) is on the floor diving for balls, Sabine is hitting shots. Our bench produced when we needed them. We could not have done it without that group."
Cal State Fullerton junior defender Jenae Gibbens (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS) anchored a stifling defense and shut down the main goal scoring threat in victories over No. 14 California and Oklahoma to garner Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors.Gibbens held California's leading goal scorer Caitlin Hannegan to just two shots in dealing the Golden Bears their first loss of the year, 2-1 in double overtime Friday. She spearheaded the effort that held Cal to a season-low nine shots. Two days later, Gibbens was assigned Oklahoma's leading scorer Whitney Palmer, one of the Big 12 Conference's top scorers with four tallies on the year. Gibbens limited her to just one shot and was a key reason the Sooners attempted just five shots on the day, a season-low by a Fullerton opponent and tying a season low by the Sooners' offense. Oklahoma also failed to get a single shot on goal in the Titans' 2-0 victory.Others nominated: Dayna Dumont, UC Davis; Kim Silos, Long Beach State; Danielle de Seriere, UC Irvine; Letty Villalpando, UC Riverside var component = "type":"ads","id":"e8c4bcd3-2ff7-44e9-8516-efee4a23a8fb","data":"location":"name":"story-template-boilerplate","html":null,"accessibility_icons":true,"sidearm_dfp":false,"common_page":false,"type":"id":4,"title":"HTML Ad","value":"html","images":false,"html":true,"dfp":false,"multiple":false,"icons":false,"effect":"id":1,"title":"None","value":"none","slide":false,"fade":false,"image_sizes":null,"dfp_sizes":null,"slick_options":null,"excluded_sport_ids":[],"id":72,"title":"Story Templates - Boilerplate","campaigns":null,"start":0,"count":10,"name":"story-template-boilerplate","count_breakpoints":null,"sport_id":14,"school_id":0,"css_class":"","extra":null,"context":null,"dummy":false,"mode":"web"; if (!("sidearmComponents" in window)) window.sidearmComponents = []; window.sidearmComponents.push(component); Related Stories 01.12.23
I also really love the father-daughter relationship. It has a lot of real ups and downs, throughout the season. What have you enjoyed about exploring that? Have there been elements of that, that have been unexpected? 2ff7e9595c
